5 Ways To Cut Your Calorie Intake This Cinco De Mayo

(and for the rest of summer)

Ever since I lived in NYC, Cinco de Mayo has been one of my favourite holidays. First of all I love Mexican food and I don’t mind a little bit of tequila here and there, but I also somehow have always had the feeling that the holiday really kicks off the summer festive season. With that said, we all know that guac and chips can add up in calories really quick and totally bust your pre summer health grove, so here are five ways to cut calories this Cinco de Mayo… and for celebrations all summer long!

1.Substitute chips for cucumber slices.

Chips and guac are essential in any Mexican meal, but if you can sub your chips of cucumber slices (round so you can scoop) you will be saving tons of salt intake and calories. If you’re eating out, ask the waiter if they can do the swap, almost every place I’ve been to has been totally willing.

2. Go veggie for your tacos rather than fish or meat.

When you’re eating fish tacos they are usually fried in batter and the meat is typically topped with tons of sauces. When making tacos at home, you can load them up with raw veggies on top of only a few sautéd veg (I love mushrooms and onions) so you still get that warm taco inside and save on the fat intake from too much oil and meat.

3. Pick low calorie juices to mix with your margarita!

The SunRype Slim lemonade flavour is perfect for a marg, or go for their new grapefruit edition that just launched (its sooo yummy!).

My favourite Cinco De Mayo cocktail:

  • White Tequila

  • Grapefruit SunRype Slim

  • Fresh squeezed lime

  • Dash of soda water

  • On Ice

4. Opt for lettuce wraps instead of tortillas.

The best option for lettuce wraps are heads of iceberg lettuce because of the shape. Don’t just pull off one piece or you will find the tacos break apart. Make the lettuce wrap thick and then you can load them up with yummy fresh ingredients all while saving yourself from the preservatives and additives in typical grocery story tortillas.

5. Use smoothies to freeze for popsicles.

Pick any of the amazing flavours, but my fave for this swap is a mango blend! You can checkout my article HERE for the tropical mango smoothie I’m currently loving. This way you can still enjoy your frozen Cinco de Mayo treat and feel good about it. Try them with no sugar except fruit! It's worth it so that you can take a chill moment in your day to enjoy the people your with and celebrate.
